How does starting the week with a BRAND SPANKING NEW edition of Monday Musings sound? For my fellow Netflix junkies, I cannot think of a better post to check out this week!
Last month, we talked about the tv moments that linger on my mind way more than they should. It happens, right? Today, my Top 5 list is also dedicated to television! However, you may not be able to find these those on your local stations!
When I’m deep in depression, a lot of the time I like to stay in bed and binge watch shows on Netflix. It’s difficult to focus on everything you perceive to be wrong with your life when you’re focused on the lives of others. Fortunately, Netflix has no shortage of dramas that are entertaining af. Plus, 9 times out of 10, you’ll walk away from the shows believing your life isn’t as bad as it seems. You may ever find yourself with a brand new crush! That’s ALWAYS a good thing! Let’s get started, shall we?
Zindagi Gulzar Hai (Life is a Bed of Roses)is a Pakistani drama about a disillusioned young woman named Kashaf Murtaza (Sanam Saeed). Kashaf is angry about her life. Her father left her mother to take another wife after she bore him three daughters and not a son. While her mother works very hard to provide for them, they are very poor. Kashaf enters University and is surrounded by students who are rich.
The most infuriating example of these elite students is Zaroon Junaid (Fawad Khan… who has the most MESMERIZING eyelashes. Seriously, you’ll swoon!). Throughout University and beyond, their rivalry is the talk of the school. As adults, they reunite, and romance blossoms. But will the bitterness of Kashaf’s youth threaten their bond?
When I See You Again is a Taiwanese romantic comedy that is insanely funny. As a teenager, Xia You Qian (Jasper Liu) was a nerd bullied in his hometown, Pu Lang Village. One day, he’s rescued by the most popular girl, An Xi (Mandy Wei). Despite not knowing his name, An Xi and Xia You Qian (whom she calls Unibrow), become friends. You Qian falls madly in love with An Xi, finding her beautiful and kind. Despite his unpolished appearance and antisocial habits, she motivates him. You Qian confesses his love at the wrong moment, and fails. Heartbroken, You Qian leaves Pu Lang Village, promising to never return.
Ten years later, he finds himself back in his hometown. Grown up, successful, and looking quite posh now, no one recognizes the former dweeb. Especially An Xi. While You Qian initially decides to get even with her, love eventually blossoms. This show also stars Jet Chao who is F-I-N-E fine. I’m-a need Taiwan to give him his own show!
Diamond Lover is a tv show set in China. Mi Mei Li (Tiffany Tang) is a quiet girl with low self-esteem. Her size causes her to suffer in both work and life. After meeting the CEO of a diamond company, Xiao Liang (Rain), she falls madly in love. A freak car accident occurs, and life is forever changed. Facial reconstruction and weight loss gives Mi Mei Li a new lease on life.
Changing her name to Mi Duo, she gets a job at Xiao Liang’s company. She uses her new life as an opportunity to pursue her lifelong dream, to become an accomplished jewelry designer. Mi Duo’s optimism and passion attracts Xiao Liang, and he falls in love with her. However, will his love endure the truth about her past? After watching the series, you have to check out Rain and his music videos. I guarantee you’ll be as shook as I was!
If you are a fan of melodrama, you will love Someone Like You. The Taiwanese drama centers around a man, Fang Zhan Cheng (Kingone Wang.. who has a voice made for phone sex) whose life changes after a car accident. In addition to losing his fiancée, Liang Luo Han (Lorene Ren), he’s also blind. Years later, he is still devastated by this tragedy, even refusing a corneal transplant that could restore his sight. He meets Chen Yu Xi (Lorene Ren), who is a dead ringer for his fiancée.
He also meets Xu Ya Ti (Nita Lei). Xu Ya Ti received Luo Han’s heart in a transplant and begins to exhibit Luo Han’s personality. Will Zhan Cheng fall for the woman who looks exactly like his beloved? Or will he fall for the woman who possesses her heart? This series has perhaps one of the most realest scenes. Women on the Taiwanese shows I’ve watched are mostly, for lack of a better word, sexless. They don’t get turned on, and if they do, they don’t show it. Chen Yu Xi keeps it 100% in an epic moment when she accidentally walks in on Fang Zhan Cheng in the shower.
Refresh Man is my favorite series on this list, because it low key inspired me out of my depression. A refresh man refers to a person who is not new on the job, but isn’t a veteran either. They coast a long their job, not caring about climbing the corporate ladder. A slacker who only shows up to get paid. When she was in high school, Zhong Yu Tang (Joanne Tseng) was the overachiever with a bright future ahead of her. At the same time, Ji Wen Kai (Aaron “Hotness” Yan) was the underachiever with the worst grades.
Ten years later, the tables have turned. Wen Kai becomes the newest CEO of the cosmetic company Yu Tang works for, and her boss. Yu Tang is made Wen Kai’s personal secretary, but fails horribly with every task she is given. Wen Kai transfers her to the worst performing department in the company, Sales Team 3. Is Ji Wen Kai doing all this for revenge, or is he secretly have wonderful plans of Yu Tang?
