I hope you are ready for a BRAND SPANKING NEW edition of Black Girl Digs Bollywood today. Last month, I shared a song from one of the first Hindi films I ever watched. This time around, I am sharing a song from the successful reboot of Umrao Jaan.
This would be a good time to mention that I’ve yet to see this remake yet. I’m not against it. It’s just that the opportunity hasn’t presented itself yet. I’ve had several opportunities to check out some of the musical numbers from the film, however. And I find myself being drawn to this song the most, which is why I’m sharing it today.
For more back story, feel free to check out my first blog post about the original Umrao Jaan. Because both movies are based on the Urdu-language novel Umrao Jaan Ada (1905), written by Mirza Hadi Ruswa, I believe them to be identical. They pretty much have to be, though I couldn’t confirm this. As with In Aankhon Ki Masti, today’s song pick takes place in a very auspicious time. Umrao (Aishwarya Rai) is about to meet the love of her life, Nawab Sultan (Abhishek Bachchan).
First glances are always an exciting part of every good love story. And the first glance shared between our lovers in this scene is a scorching one. Perhaps it’s because Aishwarya and Abhishek are real-life husband and wife. Or maybe it’s because they both look gorgeous in this scene. That’s probably it!
You want to join my Black Girl Digs Bollywood squad?!?!? Umrao Jaan is sadly not available for streaming on Netflix and I wasn’t able to find the film with subtitles on YouTube. However, if this clip was enough to encourage your interest, Amazon has the DVD available for under $20..
